About volunteerism

Almost everyone has the desire to help others.  However, with today’s demanding schedules, restricted family time, and the high cost of gas this desire often takes a back seat.  Lewis County Opportunities offers another option!  Volunteering for our crisis hotline offers a unique opportunity for individuals that would like to give back to their community without having to leave their home.   After being trained, hotline volunteers are able to assist in providing telephone crisis intervention, as well as provide information and referrals to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.   At pre-scheduled times, these calls can be diverted right to your landline phone where you can answer them in the comfort of your own home.

What volunteers say:

“ I am a volunteer and I am in a wheelchair, so I volunteer from my home…  Being on the hotline is therapeutic for me.  I really enjoy it.  It takes my mind off myself and makes me think of others”    -  Dianne

“I volunteer for the crisis hotline because I know how it feels to be on the abused end … we are there to be patient – have empathy and try to give them the best road to getting help”   -  Maggie

“The possibility of me helping to make a difference in someone’s life is very gratifying … It may take only a few words of encouragement to someone who is depressed or it may take a phone call to the proper authorities to ensure safety of a person in a crisis situation …  whatever it takes, its worth the effort “   - Blanche

If you enjoy meeting new people and helping to make a difference for a very worthy cause, why not consider becoming a Domestic Violence / Rape Crisis Program volunteer?  Any donated time, no matter how great or small, really does have an impact!
